SAIC Art Education

Critical. Meaningful. Transformative.

MAT Program

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program prepares students to become teachers of visual art in public schools and fulfills requirements for certification in the State of Illinois for K-12 art programs. MAT students learn discourses and performative practices to interpret and teach art and other forms of visual culture while fostering social and political empowerment for all students. The program’s curriculum promotes critical citizenship through agency and social change by emphasizing activism, advocacy, egalitarianism, professionalism, and social responsibility.
