SAIC Art Education

Critical. Meaningful. Transformative.

The Art Education Department has several ongoing relationships with museums, schools, and community organizations.

MAS at Little Village Lawndale High School

SAIC has partnered with MAS, a Chicago Public School, since its inception in 2005. Students and teachers at both SAIC and MAS have unique opportunities to work together on projects because of this collaborative relationship. Graduate students can participate in the MAS community as Teaching Artists-in-Residence.

Chicago Park District: TRACE program

Teens Re-Imagining Art, Community, and Environment (TRACE) is a job-focused teen leadership program run by the Chicago Park District's Department of Environment, Culture and Special Events. During the summer, the program consists of a paid internship where youth learn job and life skills, practice community organizing and public speaking, explore environmental and community issues, and employ various methods and techniques of artmaking. As part of the program, TRACErs conduct community surveys and convene public forums that promote discussion and exchange in the park and its surrounding neighborhood. While the summer program does culminate in a final public art or performance project, TRACErs continue their work throughout the year, engaging in conversations and workshops, making plans and conducting stewardship activities.
